It’s hard to believe that something so delicious could actually do your body good. But chocolate, like red wine, is rich in flavonoid antioxidants, which fight cardiovascular disease. Dark chocolate has more heart-healthy flavonoids than other chocolates.
Studies show that cocoa butter, the fat in chocolate, raises your good cholesterol (HDL) rather than bad cholesterol (LDL). Compared to coffee, tea and some sodas, chocolate is surprisingly low in caffeine. One chocolate bar or glass of chocolate milk has only as much caffeine as a cup of decaf. Neither chocolate nor sugar causes hyperactivity. Some parts of the cocoa bean may even fight cavities.
Chocolate feels good for our spirits, too. Chocolate may trigger the release of certain neurotransmitters in our brains, such as calming serotonin and feel-good endorphins. Few foods equal the sensory satisfaction of chocolate’s enticing aroma and its sweet taste as it melts in your mouth. Yum!
